Disposable Diapers VS Cloth Diapers

The Cloth Diaper Guide

There was a time when cloth diapers were a normal sight around babies. That was before disposable diapers came into the scene, and by the 1980s, nearly every mother was using disposable diapers on their babies.

But with today’s environment conscious society concerned over diapers filling up landfills, environmentalist are urging that we return to using cloth diapers.

Today’s cloth diapers have changed a great deal from the original flat cloth. Here are some interesting points as to why cloth diapers are a viable option to try.

* Cloth Diapers Are Fitted And Snug.

Unlike the traditional cloth diapers, today’s new and improved cloth diapers are contoured to fit and have elastic bands in the leg area similar to disposable diapers. They can also be easily fastened on unlike traditional diapers that needed safety pins or diaper clips.

Today’s reengineered cloth diapers support Velcro or snaps for fastening. They are also designed to fit the baby all the way up to potty training. In fact, today’s cloth diapers actually come in a wide range of convenient designs and styles comparable and as easy to use as disposable diapers.

* Cloth Diapers Are Cost Effective.

With the rising cost of baby products and apparel, cloth diapers can be a cost effective option to help you save money. Experts estimate that disposable diapers cost up to 10 times as much as it would cost to use cloth diapers. If you use 80 or more diapers a week, using cloth diapers and a diaper service will be less effective.

Of course, if you choose to wash your own diapers, that would even be more cost effective. Plus with today’s environmental conscious society, it is always best to buy items you can reuse.

* Cloth Diapers Are The More Environmentally Friendly Choice.

The dispute over the impact of cloth diapers versus disposable diapers on the environment is not clear cut. It is a fact that disposable diapers do make up much of the waste that fill up landfills every year. Also they release raw fecal material potentially contaminating surrounding soil and groundwater.

However, advocates of disposable diapers argue that laundering diapers wastes much water and energy. Add to that the detergent used to wash the diapers pollutes the waters.

What they fail to consider is that the washing water use does not contaminate the environment because these are processed through the sewerage system and diaper services wash in large batches using energy-efficient washers to reduce their environmental impact.

When all of these facts are considered, today’s cloth diapers seem to be the better choice.
