(NAPSI)-As temperatures drop, heating bills are expected to rise at a record rate. The Energy Information Administration predicts heating bills could increase 50 percent this year. Is there any way to escape the soaring costs of keeping warm? There is, if you are willing to change your "heating behavior." By spot heating your home, you may be able to save yourself more than a few pennies this winter.

Many households rely on oil heat or natural gas to heat the entire home. This is an extremely inefficient practice because you are often heating rooms you are not in, or even worse, the heat may be on when no one is even home. With today's oil prices, heating an empty home is tantamount to burning money. It is much more efficient and economical to spot heat certain rooms with electric heaters. Since most members of a household tend to congregate in one or two rooms, such as the dining room for meals or the family room to watch a favorite television show, only one or two rooms need to be heated at a time. To make the most of your purchase, it is best to know your heating needs. For instance, a convector heater or oil-filled radiator is the best choice if you are heating a drafty room or one with high ceilings.

Electric heaters also have been modernized with updated features, such as adjustable thermostats, programmable clock timers and automatic shut-off, to make them easy, convenient and safe to use. And they are no longer the eyesores they once were. Manufacturers have introduced beautiful new models to complement today's home's décor. Now, even design-conscious households can stay warm with heaters like De'Longhi's "Retro" line, which was inspired by designs from the 1950s and feature a stainless steel finish, chrome accents and vintage-style controls.

So rather than hibernate under a mountain of blankets and comforters you can beat both frigid temperatures and astronomical heating bills with an electric heater.

Electric heaters, including De'Longhi's "Retro" line, can be purchased at Bed Bath & Beyond, Lowe's and Amazon.com.
