(NC)-As humans age, our bodies may require special supplements or changes in nutrition. Our pets are no different however, more than 60 per cent of aging pets are not given food specifically formulated to address their unique needs. This fall is "Senior Season" for our four-legged friends and it is the perfect opportunity to get serious about mature pet nutrition!

There are many benefits to a science-based mature formula pet food: low levels of phosphorus and sodium help maintain the kidneys and heart, more fiber helps aid digestion and added antioxidants help slow cell oxidization. Proper nutritional balance can help counter the aging process and address some of its effects.

But do therapeutic foods really matter? In many cases the answer is yes. Take a mature pet with joint mobility issues, a common symptom in aging animals. A recent development in nutrition means that these dogs can now enjoy a new lease on life. Studies have found that foods containing high levels of eicosapentaenoic acid, an Omega-3 Fatty Acid, can help these pets run better and climb stairs more easily. These foods, such as Hill's Prescription Diet j/d, will help increase your pet's mobility and comfort.

The proof is in the responses from mature dog owners themselves: Houston, a Chocolate Lab, who used to limp and didn't much like to play is back to his old self after eating Hill's Prescription Diet j/d - "he's rising and walking more easily, and is more playful. I really think this food is improving his quality of life." says Houston's owner Ramsey. Since starting j/d, Star Frost, an aging white German Sheppard who had problems with her back hip and had to hop up the stairs is now engaging in wrestling and play - "she seems to be in a much better spirit and much more mobile," says Jeffery, Star Frost's loving owner.

"Mature pets may slow down but that doesn't mean they stop entirely," says Dr. Clayton MacKay, DVM. "Feeding pets therapeutic foods is one way to provide them with the proper nutrients they need to fulfill their senior lives. The research behind these various products is thorough and conducted with pet health in mind."

The type of pet food, frequency of feeding and amount of food should be determined with the help of a veterinarian to ensure your pet lives a long, happy and balanced life.
