(NUI) - Today's technology makes homes more comfortable than ever. They have automatic lighting, energy efficient appliances and huge, comfortable furniture.
But one area seems to be overlooked in many homes: air conditioning and heating. A typical home doesn't have just one water faucet or one light switch. So, why does the typical home only have one thermostat?
As you probably know, it's almost impossible to keep every room in the house at a comfortable temperature. Expansive windows to the south soak up the sun's heat, while harsh winds cool the north side of the house. Heat rises up the stairs leaving the main floor and filling upstairs rooms. And the cool air settles to the lowest floor. This typical situation results in rooms that are too hot or too cold.
Many of today's most popular home design features make an evenly distributed temperature almost impossible. And the situation is further aggravated when a home's heating and cooling system is controlled by a single thermostat. That thermostat primarily affects only the room in which it is located, and the temperature it senses is not representative of the whole house.
One way to solve this problem is to zone its heating and cooling system. Zone control systems, such as Aprilaire's Zoned Comfort Control System, use automatic dampers and multiple thermostats that control the temperature in separate areas of the house.
Here are a few conditions that necessitate zoning in a home:
* More than one level.
* A room or rooms with expansive glass areas.
* Large open areas such as vaulted ceilings, an atrium or a solarium.
* A layout that rambles in many directions.
* An extra room off the back or over the garage.
* Furnished rooms in the basement or attic.
* Concrete slab floor.
With zoning, you no longer have to worry about big temperature differences from floor to floor, and you may save as much as 20 percent on your energy bills. For more information about Zoned Comfort Control and other indoor air quality solutions, visit www.aprilaire.com.
