7 Tips When Flying With Your Dog
When you are going to travel on a plane with your dog the secret to success is preparation and planning. Call the airlines and find out what they require for you to do so, and make sure you do exactly what they tell you, or you may miss the plane. The airlines today will not allow you to board the plane if you do not follow their requirements completely. Here are some things you should do first.

1. Always check out where in the plane your dog will be kept, and exactly what type of pet carrier or dog crate you need to keep him in.

2. When you make your reservations make sure you let the airline know you intend to bring your pet along and pay the necessary fees involved with bringing him.

3. Do the airlines require any proof of vaccinations or letters from your veterinarian? Do they have any pet related forms for you to fill out in advance? These are good questions to ask at the time you make your reservation. It is better to ask long before your scheduled flight so you have time to prepare the necessary documents you may need.

4. Let your veterinarian know your dog will be flying and ask him the best way to handle this. He may want to give your dog a tranquilizer, if he feels it is in the best interest of your pet.

5. The airline may let you carry your dog directly on the plane in a travel carrier if your pet is small. If the airline you choose does not allow this, your dog will most likely be put in the hold, or cargo area of the plane with the baggage. You can ask about the temperatures in this area, will it be hot? Will it be cold? If cold is the answer you may want to put a sweater or coat on your dog.

6. Check with your veterinarian about food and water. How long before the flight should your dogs food be withheld? What about water? Should you give your pet some before? The vet will know the answers to these questions and of course, you can ask him if there is anything you have forgotten.

7. Be at the airport early! You will have to check your dog, and you don't want this to delay your arrival to your gate so you can board the plane.

8. Pack all the food and toys you will need for your dog on the trip.
