A Look At The Bluetooth Glossary

Let’s take a look at the terms that are most used when it comes to Bluetooth technology. You’ll find that familiarizing yourself with these terms will give you an advantage when it comes to using Bluetooth.

2 in 1 handset

When your handset acts as a remote to a base unit which has the network connection, it is referred to as a 2 in 1 handset.

3G

If you hear the term 3G used, it means third generation or the next generation referring to digital phone technology.

802.11 WLAN

802.11 WLAN is the LAN specification which is wireless which is what the IEEE defines.

AKC or Access code

Then you have just ACK which is a shortened version of ‘acknowledge’ while Access Code refers to one of the three base band codes which are DAC, CAC and IAC.

ACL

The Asynchronous Connectionless Link is called ACL and this is one of the two kinds of Bluetooth-defined data links.

ACO

Authenticated Ciphering Offset is abbreviated to ACO.

Active mode

Your Bluetooth is said to be in the ‘active mode’ when it participates on the channel and the transmission is scheduled by the master, depending on the transmission demands that come in from the slaves.

AP

The AP is, as is obvious, the access point.

Authentification/Authentification device

Authentification is the verification of the person at the other end of the link while the Authentification device is a device where the verification has been done for the duration of the present link.

Baseband

The baseband refers to the specs of the hardware’s digital
signal processing. The hardware or the controller is what carries out the protocols of the baseband.

BD BER

BD of course stands for the Bluetooth device while BER is the Bit Error Rate.

This is just a basic introduction to the many terms that form part of Bluetooth technology. There are many more and it might be well worth your while to hone up your skills in learning these terms, because let’s face it, it looks like Bluetooth is here to stay for a long, long time. It really is the best wireless technology in the world and its beauty perhaps lies in its simplicity.

You could go and look up more terms that are pertinent to Bluetooth and very soon, you’ll be quite at home not just using Bluetooth technology but being very comfortable using the terms applicable to it as well. Considering how surrounded we are today with Bluetooth technology, the terms should come easy to us too.
