A New Generation of Clematis Meets Modern-Day Garden Design

(ARA) - Flowers and vegetables are popping-up on rooftop gardens in the city, decorating outdoor living rooms in the suburbs and making guest appearances at homes and businesses everywhere in between this spring.

Gardening expert Raymond Evison has carefully studied modern day gardening trends and the changing American landscape and developed cultivars of clematis that are just the ticket for modern-day gardeners.

The Comforts of Inside Move Outdoors

“The outdoor living trend of gardeners trying to create an extension of their interior space to the outdoors has reached an all time high,” says Evison. “Gardeners have an equally strong desire to decorate the outside of their home, deck, patio and all around the property as they would when decorating their living rooms.”

According to Evison, container plants are the new outdoor accessory and well-placed container plants, like the jewel toned Patio Clematis, balance outdoor rooms the same way end tables and curio cabinets bring balance to indoor spaces.

“Patio plants can be used to accentuate an entryway, add interest to an outdoor dining table or to create the illusion of a separate sitting area on a large deck or porch.”

Today’s American landscape is taking on a new look -- smaller.

The National Association of Realtors reports that trends towards town home and apartment living are on the rise, and will reach new highs by 2015.

“Home gardeners are working with more constraints than ever before,” says Evison. “Many of them not only have less time to garden, but also less space.”

A New Generation of Clematis: Plus One

Gardeners want plants that grow up or down, rather than out. To create sensational styles in these smaller beds and boarders or on patios and decks, Evison recommends training clematis to climb up a lattice trellis, using a decorative ground cover to fill in the base.

“The result is breathtaking,” he adds, “You will create a wall of color that offers maximum impact without overwhelming the small space.”

High Fashion Designs Go Mainstream

Time-starved consumers balancing work, family and leisure say that “low-maintenance” and “instant impact” top their list in terms of qualities they look for in new plants. But they also say that they want to re-create the high-fashion garden designs seen in magazines.

Evison’s latest clematis, found in the Patio and Garden collections, offer qualities that make them well-suited for gardeners that value a high-end look with minimal effort.

“I bred the clematis to be low-maintenance, disease-resistant and most of all to bloom from spring through fall,” says Evison.

For versatility throughout the season, Evison recommends potting up the clematis in varying-sized planters, urns and baskets.
