Canadian Moms Confused About Some ABC's of Infant Nutrition

(NC)-According to a new survey, 98 per cent of new moms feel very confident about their knowledge of infant nutrition. However, when probed, the survey found that there is confusion when it comes to allergy prevention, digestive discomforts, fatty acids, and certain nutrients such as vitamin D and iron.

Nutrition can seem complicated. There is so much information for a new parent to take in and keeping everything straight can be confusing.

Breastfeeding is the optimal method of feeding babies. Health Canada recommends that mothers breastfeed their babies exclusively for six months and continue for up to two years. However, if a mother cannot, or chooses not to breastfeed, she needs to be educated on how to select the best infant formula.

"Breast is best when it comes to baby's nutrition," says pediatrician Dr. Nessa Bayer. "However, what many parents don't realize is that not all formulas are created equally."

An easy way to remember what to look for when choosing a routine formula is following these simple ABC's:

A - Allergy: a formula that is partially hydrolyzed, meaning that the protein has been partially broken down to help reduce the risk of developing allergies

B - Baby's digestion: a formula that is easier to digest because it is made of 100 per cent whey protein that is partially broken down

C - Contains omega: a formula that contains DHA (an omega-3 fatty acid) & ARA (an omega-6 fatty acid) to help support brain and eye development

"I am a mother of two and when I was no longer able to breastfeed, I used Nestlé Good Start with Omega-3 & Omega-6, because it offered all the ABC's." comments Dr. Bayer.

Parents should consult with their baby's health care professional if they are considering a feeding change.
