From Cat Litter to Compost

(NUI) - As avid gardeners know, winterizing plants is critical in most climates as we enter the colder months. And with the drought still plaguing much of the country, conserving water at the roots of plants by mulching will be crucial for their survival.

But what gardeners may not know is that certain cat litters can be a great source of mulch and compost.

For example, Swheat Scoop Natural Wheat Litter is an all natural, scoopable litter that's made from naturally processed wheat. Once scooped clean, it makes an excellent mulch, or a nutrient-rich addition to a compost pile intended for ornamental (nonvegetable) gardens.

Each year, about 4 billion pounds of cat litter are thrown into landfills. Most of that litter, an estimated 100,000 truckloads per year, is made from clay which cannot be reabsorbed by the environment and thus will never biodegrade. Because Swheat Scoop is made only from wheat, it is entirely biodegradable. Upon disposal, it will begin to break down and simply dissolve away. This litter is also certified flushable and sewer/septic safe.

Moreover, many scoopable litters are made with silica, sodium bentonite or chemical additives for odor control and clumping. Swheat Scoop is clay-free, chemical-free and fragrance-free, which means it's completely safe for cats and other household pets. In fact, it's so safe, it's recommended by veterinarians for use with kittens and newly declawed cats.

Nine years of testimonials attest to how well Swheat Scoop works. Through a patented process, natural wheat enzymes work continuously to eliminate rather than mask litter box odors. The wheat's natural starches also are activated when exposed to moisture, allowing firm clumps to form for easy cleanup. In addition, wheat makes for a neater litter that minimizes tracking around the house and doesn't raise clay dust clouds when poured.

Swheat Scoop is available at neighborhood pet stores from coast to coast, as well as Fry's Food & Fry's Marketplace, Kroger, Petco, PETsMART, PET VALU, Smith's Food & Drug and Target. For more information, visit www.swheatscoop.com or call 1-800-SWHEATS (794-3287).
