Crate Training Your Dog or Puppy

There are several good reasons to crate train your dog or your new puppy. One is for his own safety. Two is for your peace of mind. Three is to make housebreaking easier for the both of you. Four is to give him his own special place where he can feel safe and comfortable.


1. Crate training makes housebreaking easier.

Dogs and puppies like to have their own space, and they like it to be clean. If you crate your puppy he will try not to make a mess in his area. You will need to take the puppy out often, being so young he does not have great control over his bladder or elimination yet. Always take him out after he eats or drinks. It will help to teach him this is where he should do his duty.

When you do take him out and he does what he has to do, praise him excessively. In no time at all he will get the picture of what you want him to do and where.

Don't crate your pet all the time, puppies do need time to play and socialize with you and your family, so you all can form a bond of friendship and trust.

2. Puppies and dogs can be destructive.

Puppies are teething and chewing makes them feel better. Dogs can get bored and when they do, look out shoes! They chew and damage furniture, shoes, and whatever else they possibly can! If your dog or puppy displays this type of behavior put him in his crate with some toys or chews when you go out.

This will insure that your home is safe from damage, your shoes will be in wearable condition, and your dog or puppy will not be in trouble when you get home.

3. The dog crate keeps your dog or puppy safe in your home.

When you are out or home, but cannot supervise your puppy or dog's activities yourself, he can get into loads of trouble with a capital T!

In our homes there are many places we don't want our pets to go. The Garbage is one of them. Who knows what is in there? Broken glass? Chicken bones? Aluminum cans with sharp edges? Your dog or puppy could get cut or choke!

How about household cleaners? We all have them, and try to keep them in cabinets or under the sink, but sometimes they are out. Drain cleaners have acid in them, ammonia, bleach, they could all poison your pet. So make sure to keep him away when you are using them.

Houseplants, so lovely and green, yet they too can poison your dog or puppy. Poinsettias, cyclamen, the peace lily, cutleaf philodendron, just to name a few, are all poisonous to your pets.

4. Bringing your dog or puppy in the car.

Oh boy! Dogs love to stick their heads out of a car window. They love to pace back and forth in the back seat, and jump from the back to the front seat. A dog crate would make this impossible, so you can keep your eye on the road, not on the dog or puppy. That's a pretty good idea, don't you think!

This will help you not to be distracted while driving, you need all your attention on the road, not on your dog. And it keeps the dog safe from injuring himself in your car, when you can't do much to help him.

There you have it, a few simple reasons why to keep your dog or puppy in a dog crate. I am sure once you think about it you will come up with at least 20 more. It will make your life easier and give you one less thing to worry about, and it will keep your pet safe, and happy.
