When we transfer, send, upload, download, and share digital audio files online, the most common format we would use is MP3. But what is MP3 exactly?

MP3 is simply a method of compressing audio files so they are small enough to send over the Internet. It is also referred to as MPEG – ½ Layer 3, MPEG-3, MPEG Layer III. MPEG 3, and many more. MP3 files are the preferred file formats used during file transfers because it exhibits more portability options and it is more compact and compressed compared to other files. A 4-minute song is about 40MB worth of hard drive space but when you convert it into MP3, you can have it for only 4MB.

However, despite MP3’s obvious superiority of other files during online file transfers, why is it that we still experience problems when we upload or download MP3 songs?

Perhaps the culprit lies in your connection. It’s too slow. Too erratic. This is especially true if you have a dial-up connection. But more often than not, the problem lies in your web browser.

Web browsers base their functions on HTML and as HTML does not support MP3, this causes a problem when you download MP3 songs. Problems include busy links or broken connection when you click on a link to download MP3 songs.
