(ARA) – In past centuries, students faced the challenge of traveling miles to school on foot in all weather conditions in search of an education. Students in the 21st century face a new challenge: the global classroom has replaced the one-room schoolhouse, and technology is the new defining factor in effective education.
But at a time when increasing global competition makes it even more essential to give American students a technology edge, school budgets are being slashed at every turn. As a result, many U.S. school districts cannot afford the latest technology that can expand the possibilities of education and increase the students’ dreams for success.

Teachers, parents, administrators and school boards alike are aware that today’s children must have the skills and familiarity with technology necessary to meet the demands of a global economy. They want to provide students with an advantage of access to the latest computers, software, monitors and cutting edge audio-visual equipment, but budget concerns place these technologies out of reach for many.

A new philanthropy program from Samsung called Samsung’s Hope for Education aims to award technology to elementary, middle and high schools across the United States. This year, through a partnership with Microsoft, the program will donate a total of $2 million worth of technology products and software to selected schools.

“Samsung is committed to leveraging our leadership in global technology on behalf of today’s schools, educators and students. With elementary, middle and high school budgets being cut each year, we must take positive steps to ensure that American students have the necessary technology to allow them to live up to their potential,” says Peter Weedfald, Senior Vice President of North American Strategic Marketing, Samsung Electronics America, Inc.

“Technology can open new horizons for learning, and every child today should have access to the tools that are necessary for success. Samsung’s Hope for Education will continue to enlist partners and expand the program to provide our children with a bright future,” he adds.

Hope for Education is just one of the education initiatives supported by Samsung Electronics America. Other programs include scholarships offered in partnership with the American Legion and Samsung’s Four Seasons of Hope, a program dedicated to supporting community-based foundations and charities led by well-known sports personalities (www.fourseasonsofhope.com).
