'Holy Cow!' Are You Cleaning Your Home with Environmentally Safe Products?

(ARA) – Are you so turned off by the smell of harsh chemicals that you put off tasks that need to get done, like cleaning the bathrooms, kitchen and floors? Linda Cuppett of Honolulu, Hawaii, wishes a smell aversion was her only complaint about cleaning.

“I actually prefer a clean environment, but because of my asthma, used to go into coughing fits every time I’d spray cleaner onto the counters, mirrors or floors,” she says. And she’s not alone. The problem is so widespread that in its guide, “Improving Indoor Air Quality: A Guide For Homeowners” the American Lung Association advises people to keep lids tight on cleaning products.

The report says, “Some of the household cleaning products that remove dust, dirt, bacteria, germs and odors may leave behind harmful chemicals that can pollute the air and cause potential health problems for you, your family, and your pets. Prolonged exposure to certain chemicals in these products has been linked to dizziness, nausea, allergic reactions, eye, skin and respiratory tract irritation, and in some cases, cancer.”

Not wanting to risk her health, or that of her family, Cuppett decided it made sense to seek out a household cleaner that was environmentally friendly, and one day came across exactly what she was looking for at her local drug store.

She purchased a bottle of Holy Cow All Purpose Cleaner and brought it home to try out on her countertops, cabinets and floors in the kitchen. “It was amazing,” she says. “The cleaner worked just as well if not better than the name brands, left no residue, had no chemical smell and best of all, it didn’t make me cough like all the other cleaners I had used in the past.”

Holy Cow brand cleaners were developed by the husband and wife team of Joni and Bob Hilton of Sacramento, Calif., shortly after Joni’s book titled “Housekeeping Secrets My Mother Never Taught Me,” was published. In it, she described all the current cleaning products on the market at the time and she and Bob quickly realized that most people had hundreds of dollars worth of cleaners stuffed under their sinks that were either full of harsh chemicals or didn’t work very well.

They thought to themselves, “Wouldn’t it be great if there was one product that not only cleaned everything, but was safe around kids and pets?” Holy Cow Concentrated Cleaner hit the market in October of 2003. They decided to call it Holy Cow because the first thought that came to mind when they saw how well it worked was, “Holy Cow, this stuff really works!”

“The main cleaning agent in Holy Cow is a unique, recently developed surfactant (soap) that had never been used before,” explains company spokesperson Mark Kendro. “This surfactant, in combination with other types of soaps that make up the Holy Cow formula, makes cleaning fast and easy.”

Vivian Hall of Howell, Mich., a suburb of Detroit agrees. Most people do everything they can to avoid house cleaning, but she has actually made a career out of cleaning up other people’s messes, and has been doing it for 25 years now.

“I’ve never been thrilled by the idea of working with chemicals that can be harmful, but because of what I do, I thought there was no way to avoid it,” she says. That is until she found Holy Cow cleaner. “The label said it was natural, environmentally friendly and could clean pretty much anything. It was affordably priced so I decided to pick some up and try it,” says Hall, and now she doesn’t use anything else.

There are three different Holy Cow formulas available: Holy Cow Concentrated Cleaner, which can be used for big jobs such as degreasing a car engine, and cleaning an oven or barbecue grill; Holy Cow All-Purpose Cleaner, which can be used inside the house for cleaning floors, countertops, sinks, showers and toilets; and Holy Cow Glass Cleaner, a streak-free glass cleaner which is also capable of eliminating water spots over time.

All Holy Cow Cleaners are so safe that you don’t need to wear gloves to use them. People with breathing problems, even asthma, can safely use them, and if a pet or child were to accidentally ingest any of our products, there’s no need to panic and call poison control. There’s nothing harmful in any of our products,” says Kendro.

“It’s safe and there’s nothing like it.” says Hall. “You just spray it on, wipe it off a few seconds later and walk away. There’s no streaking or residue left behind, and it has a pleasant smell too.”

Cuppett says her only complaint about the cleaner is that it’s sometimes hard to find at the store. “Word is definitely getting out about how great this stuff is,” she says.

You can find Holy Cow Cleaning products at Wal-Mart, Walgreens and Ace Hardware stores nationwide. They are also available at select Bed, Bath & Beyond stores, Sams Clubs and grocery stores or you can order direct from the manufacturer by calling (877) 946-5926 or logging on to their Web site: www.holycowproducts.com.
