(NUI) - Is your house enticing to burglars? If you have travel plans this holiday season, it's important to think about your home's security while you are gone.

Burglaries can happen anytime but increase when homeowners are away from their properties for extended periods of time, commonly during holidays and other peak travel times.

So what can you do to minimize the chances of a break-in? One of the best ways to deter thieves is to install a good security system in your home.

One system you can install yourself is the GE SmartSecurity Wireless Do-It-Yourself Alarm and Self-monitoring System, a self-monitored security system and lighting control center. The keypad, control unit and sounder are built into one compact device that requires no wiring.

If a problem is identified, the system calls up to two phone numbers, alerting the homeowner of the problem with a voice message. The homeowner can disarm and control the system over the phone line or with a wireless remote.

The basic starter kit includes a control panel, installation accessories, and two door or

window sensors. Up to 24 sensors can be added, including motion sensors, smoke and fire sensors, and water sensors. The system sells for less than $200 and there are no monthly fees.

Along with a security system, taking a few common-sense precautions will help keep intruders away:

* Ask a friend or trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your home.

* Remember to stop the mail and newspaper delivery.

* Do not say you're not home on your answering machine.

* Do not leave out ladders or anything else that a burglar can climb.

* Lock all windows and doors.

* Keep your tools inside your home. A burglar could use them to force his way inside.

* Store valuable items where they cannot be seen from the outside.

* Keep your trees, hedges and bushes trimmed to avoid giving a burglar a place to hide.

* Keep the area around your home well lit. Your street address should be visible from a distance.

* Do not leave your key hidden outdoors.
