(NC)-Canadians love their pets - in fact, 83 per cent of cat and dog owners consider their pets to be a part of the family. To make the most of your relationship, try following these steps to strengthen your bond and increase your pet's vitality.

1. An active pet is a happy pet. Find activities you and your cat or dog can do together. Try giving your cat a catnip mouse or train a laser pointer on the ground for him to chase. If you have a dog, visit an off-leash park on weekends to let your dog stretch her legs.and yours! Daily play and exercise will not only help both of you sleep better at night; it will help strengthen your bond.

2. Pet proof your home. Make sure all electrical cords and breakable objects are safely placed and household cleaning products are stored away where pets won't find them. Decorative plants can be a tempting snack, but many are poisonous to cats and dogs so keep them well out of reach of inquisitive mouths.

3. Just as humans have annual physical exams, so should your pet. Schedule regular checkups with your veterinarian. Cats and dogs are not always able to communicate when they're ill. Small changes, such as weight loss or increased thirst may indicate underlying problems which your veterinarian can diagnose and treat before they become emergencies.

Speak with your veterinarian about treating your pet with a broad spectrum preventative treatment, such as Revolution, which will protect against parasites like fleas and heartworm. An ounce of protection really is worth a pound of cure when it comes to your loved one's health.
