In the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve there are 103 known mammal species as well as 336 know bird species. Here you will find animals in their natural habitat. The Reserve is also an important nesting site for two endangered sea turtle species.

The Mexican government set aside this acreage in 1986. They created a huge national park where animals, plants and the Mayan ruins would be protected.

Many tourists have found that Cancun is a place they can travel to and find a new appreciation for the beauty of life and the land.

You can actually stay in the park. There are some restricted areas where no one is allowed to access in order to protect the surroundings.

There are two different ways to tour the jungle. You can travel by car or van with a biologist, who speak both English and Spanish.

You have to reserve the tour in advance, so if you plan on taking it make sure to book your date in advance. You can also tour the lagoon in a boat. For the second part of the tour, you and many other visitors will board a motor boat and tour the lagoon.

While traveling the canal you will be surrounded by mangrove trees, orchids, bromeliads,and will see birds of all kinds.

You can also tour on your own and make your own discoveries. There is no admission, but you must register your car. The roads are not in good condition, and if you go make sure to fill your car up with gas in Tulum. There are no gas stations in the reserve.

It is always a wonderful experience to spend a day at the reserve. You will be able to see and enjoy birds animals and plants that you would not normally see on your trip to Cancun. You could spot some monkey or perhaps even a Jaguar.

The nature lover should not miss this tour spot during your vacation. The kids will enjoy it almost as much as the adults.
