(NAPSI)-While flower lovers can appreciate orchids for their exotic and delicate charm, there's more to these beautiful blooms than many realize. For instance:

• Orchids are one of the largest groups of flowering plants, consisting of some 25,000 to 30,000 species;

• In their natural environment, each orchid species is dependent on a specific type of insect to carry out its pollination; and

• There are two principal types of orchids: terrestrials, which feature extensive belowground root systems, and epiphytes, characterized by their aerial or exposed root structure.

For individuals fascinated by these flowers, there will soon be an opportunity to have the ultimate orchid experience. Held once every three years in a different international location, the World Orchid Conference® (WOC) is the largest and most influential gathering of orchid enthusiasts, hobbyists, growers, hybridizers and scientists. Rare species, fragrant floral compositions and creative hybrids will seduce and impress visitors to this momentous show.

The highlight of the 2008 WOC-to be held January 23-27 in Miami, Fla., the first time in 25 years that the conference will be held in the U.S.-will be its major orchid show, titled "Orchids-Nature's Masterpiece." Nearly 100,000 attendees are expected for the conference, which will feature orchids by the tens of thousands arriving from every major orchid-growing center in the world.

Many of these exotic flowers will arrive courtesy of FedEx, its official shipping partner. These prestigious "guests of honor" will be displayed in artistically designed exhibits of varying sizes and shapes. Acclaimed orchid growers from around the world will exhibit and sell their magnificent blossoms. Orchid art and related items will be on display and there will be a large sales mart carrying plants and all things related to orchids.

In addition to the extravagant show and sale, the WOC will spotlight an extensive seminar and lecture series on science, conservation and horticulture, sponsored by The Arthur F. and Alice E. Adams Charitable Foundation. There will also be parties, networking events and sight-seeing opportunities.

To register as a vendor or attendee for WOC, which will be held at the Sheraton Miami Mart Hotel and Exhibition Center, or for additional information-including a complete schedule-visit the Web site at www.19woc.com.

All Things Orchids: Orchids are found in nearly every climactic condition except deserts. The world's biggest, most popular orchid show will take root in the lush, tropical setting of Miami.
