(NewsUSA) - Parents are faced with many worries concerning their children's school.
Issues regarding the type of education, finding the proper teachers and peer pressure their children will face are a few of the burdens confronted by a father and mother.
These are major concerns that will have a great impact on a child's future.
However, one thing that could have a bigger impact, with possibly deadly results, isn't even something your child can see - germs. An elementary school, where kids share practically everything, is a potential petri dish of possibility to spread germs.
Bacteria, yeast and mold can be found on pencils, desks, lockers and drinking fountains. Yet, the efforts to regularly keep these surfaces clean is minimal.
Young children catch about eight colds a year. Combined, they lose nearly 22 million school days due to the common cold alone. Even teachers say more needs to be done to make our classrooms cleaner and healthier for children.
An overwhelming 92 percent of teachers say that regular disinfecting in classrooms can result in fewer absences caused by illness and 96 percent of them believe more can be done to make classrooms cleaner and healthier places for our children, according to a survey presented at a news briefing by the American Medical Association.
The most important concept to remember is to wash your hands frequently. " We can't stress this enough when it comes to keeping colds and flu away," says Paul Horowitz, MD, the medical director of pediatric clinics at Legacy Health System in Portland, Ore. "Avoid eating or touching your eyes, nose, and mouth without washing your hands first."
Another important aspect that isn't performed nearly enough is disinfecting the school. Frequent cleaning of the objects the children touch everyday with products like Red Reef Laboratories' BioClear RD is of prime importance when trying to prevent the onset of cross-contamination.
