(NAPSI)-Imagine riding up the side of a hill, across a babbling brook, or driving a 19th century carriage across the meadow, pulled by two beautiful Morgan horses. You can make that a reality this summer by visiting the national events celebrating the history of the Morgan horse.
The American Morgan Horse Association (AMHA) is Celebrating the Morgan from September 10 to 12, 2005. Anyone who has ever thought about owning a Morgan, or would simply enjoy a day in the country, can visit the AMHA Web site, www.morganhorse.com, for a calendar of fun-filled events. Whether you're a horse-enthusiast or just interested in brushing up on a little American history, the 10,000-member association welcomes you.
Among the many thrills of the event, there will be trail rides, open barns, picnics, opportunities to ride and drive Morgans, and, to the delight of the younger set, take a horse to school.
Believe it or not, the Morgan horse owns a big piece of American history. Though Morgans have their roots in Vermont, initially, they were used to help farmers clear land and provide transportation throughout New England. In the early days, true-trotting Morgans were also known as the fastest trotting horses in the world.
During the Civil War, Morgans were the preferred mounts of Union and Confederate cavalry soldiers. It is also of interest to note that equestrian units leading presidential inaugural and Rose Bowl parades have included Morgans. Several park and police horses are also Morgans. In 1905, Morgans were officially honored with an Act of Congress that established the United States Morgan Horse Farm in Weybridge, Vermont.
