Oil Production May Be At Its Peak, Experts Say
Anyone who has recently visited a gas station has felt the pinch of the impending oil crisis by having to pay more than $3 per gallon for gas. While most people understand that we are facing a worldwide shortage of one of our most precious commodities, the reasons behind the deficiency remain somewhat vague. Absolutely. Green building used to be something of a luxury-
think solar-paneled homes, owned by a few well-off eco-pioneers. Now it's part of the mainstream. Everyday builders and homeowners have a huge range of affordable choices when it comes to energy efficiency and other environmentally sustainable features.

Homegrown Fuel Helps Energize U.S.
When it comes to one energy source, the U.S. may be more self-sufficient than some might expect. The majority of natural gas consumed in America is produced in America. In fact, natural gas is abundant in the U.S.-enough to cover American needs for years to come-and experts say it's safer, less expensive and better for the environment than many other sources. They argue that natural gas has a proven record of safety and reliability. It's been used to heat American homes and generate power for years.

Cleaning Your Home Comfort System
When catching up on seasonal home repairs and maintenance, don't forget your home's cooling system.
You can use the transition time between heating and air conditioning seasons to insure your home's heating and cooling systems are working efficiently.
A system working at peak capacity conserves energy dollars and avoids the stress of additional service calls.

Oil Drilling In Alaska Is Environmentally Safe
If the Bush Administration and Congress finally agree to limited oil and gas drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), the only endangered specie likely to bite the dust is the canard.
Canard, of course, is the French word for "duck"-but over the years it also has come to mean a hoax or false rumor.
Unfortunately, many environmentalists these days are engaging in a canard that threatens both American prosperity and security.

Time To Rethink Nuclear Energy
DEAR DR. MOORE:

I've heard that the U.S. wants to increase its reliance on nuclear power. Did Chernobyl and Three Mile Island teach us nothing?
Chernobyl and Three Mile Island taught us a great deal, but not what people tend to think. Chernobyl was a disaster waiting to happen. In addition to poor management, the reactor was badly designed and didn't have a containment shell to prevent the escape of radioactive materials if something went wrong. Three Mile Island, on the other hand, demonstrated the relative safety of current-generation nuclear power plants.

Recycling On The Rise
Chances are you are not the first person to read this paper. In fact, many other people have probably read from it, used it as wrapping or even written on it. That's because more than 37 percent of the fiber used to make new paper and paper products comes from recovered paper. U.S. paper recovery recently reached an all-time high of 50.3 percent. Positive that we can recover more paper for recycling, the paper industry has set an aggressive goal to recover 55 percent of all paper consumed in the U.S. by 2012.

Experts say the benefits of recycling paper are extensive and that every bit of paper used for recycling today helps to improve the environment tomorrow.

Cool Routes To Comfort
If heating and cooling costs get you hot under the collar, heed these hints:

• Program in savings: A programmable thermostat can turn the heat or air-conditioning down when you're asleep or away.

• Filter out problems. Check and replace furnace and air conditioner filters so the systems run more efficiently.

• Go green. Plant shade trees and shrubs outside your windows.

Enjoy The Outdoors Without Pests
According to the most recent survey by the National Gardening Association, consumers spent more than $38 billion on their lawns and gardens a year. More and more homeowners are spending some of that money creating relaxing outdoor living spaces that are more like open-air living rooms.
"Merging indoor and outdoor living areas is a time-honored landscape technique that increases living space by creating patios, sitting areas, gardens and lawns that are easily accessible and visible from the indoors," says Garden Expert Lance Walheim, the author of "Lawn Care for Dummies" and who often writes for Sunset and other national gardening publications.

Oil Spills: Bringing The Solution Back To The Home
Devastating oil spills in the Delaware River near Pennsylvania, Skan Bay in Alaska and Hyannis Harbor in Massachusetts, have harmed hundreds of aquatic animals, namely ducks, turtles, swans and otters.
After an area is contaminated with oil, wildlife rescue organizations, such as International Bird Rescue Research Center (IBRRC) and Tri-State Bird Rescue & Research, come on the scene to help the animals in distress. Trained rescue workers provide the affected animals with proper hydration and nutrition and wash them in tubs of warm water.

Congress To Protect Endangered Species
)-"The Endangered Species Act (ESA) desperately needs an update and renewed focus on species recovery," said Richard Pombo (R-CA), chairman of the House Resources Committee. "Its one-percent recovery result over the last 30 years has failed to live up to the Act's noble intent and our intrinsic value as Americans."
Pombo, who has joined Senators Chafee (R-RI) and Crapo (R-ID), as well as Representative Walden (R-OR) to work on improvements to ESA, was referring to the fact that only 10 of over 1,300 species listed as threatened or endangered since the Act was passed in 1973 have recovered sufficiently to be taken off the lists.

Making School Buses Safer And Cleaner
Thanks to new technology and a government program, there's good news for parents, students and school districts that rely on diesel technology to transport children to and from school in a safe and economical manner. Diesel engines power most of the school bus fleets in the U.S. Millions of children ride the school bus every day, and school buses drive more than four billion miles each year.

Mining Companies Must Think "Sustainably"
DEAR DR. MOORE:

You promote the use of renewable materials, but what about iron and copper? Can mining be environmentally friendly?

I try to use re-newable energy and materials where I can but I certainly recognize the importance of iron, copper and other mined products. As for whether the industry can be environmentally friendly, the answer is yes.

Celebrate The Earth The Organic Way
Many people try to promote a clean, healthy and sustainable environment by planting trees, installing water-efficient showerheads in their homes and cleaning a park or roadway. Contributing to the health and well-being of the Earth, however, can be as simple as altering your eating habits through organic foods. As Americans take a closer look at their diets, many turn to organic food.

Cabin Air Filters Help Drivers Breathe Easier
Drivers and passengers may now breathe a little easier when sitting in heavy traffic. Automobile manufacturers have begun installing cabin air filters-which work much like the furnace or air-conditioning filters found in most homes-to significantly reduce the amount of carbon monoxide, mold spores and other dangerous contaminants found in many vehicles. The U.S. Car Care Council says these types of contaminants can be six times more concentrated in a car than outside the vehicle.

Bridges, parking lots, buildings and sidewalks. Because durability, strength and versatility are important, you'd expect that these structures are often built of concrete. However, did you know that concrete has many positive environmental surprises?
As "green" building practices continue to gain popularity, so does the use of concrete, according to the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA). Because of its sustainable, stable, energy-efficient, recyclable and health-friendly properties, concrete is an ideal green-building choice.

Urban Trees a Good Investment
DEAR DR. MOORE:

I want to plant some trees in my yard. What can I do to make sure they survive?

You're right to be cautious. Planting trees is a great idea for many reasons, including the fact that it can increase the value of your home and reduce energy costs. Of course, it's only a good investment if the trees survive. More than 50 percent of trees planted in urban environments die within the first two years. The first thing to consider is the species. Native trees are often preferable because they're well suited to the climate and soil type.
