Work Is A Four-Letter Word
I can hear the jokes already and most of them are not politically correct. Let me throw out a word that we often don't attach to work and yet I think it is a word of redemption, of contribution, of achievement, of community, and ultimately, of legacy.

Construction Industry Also Builds Jobs
Appreciation for what the construction industry offers to communities and the nation is building. From our schools, libraries and hospitals to our stadiums, civic centers and skyscrapers, the construction industry delivers much more than economic development to communities worldwide.
Construction is an always-changing and growing field. Last year alone, the value of finished construction projects skyrocketed past $1 trillion and the U.S. Department of Labor reported that the industry will create more than one million new jobs between 2002 and 2012.

Good News For Employers: Over-65 Crowd Staying On Job
Believe it or not, by 2030, one in five Americans will be age 65 or older. That means a good deal of the population-mainly the baby boomers-will be retired and enjoying golf, embarking on travel adventures, spending time with the family or finally taking that long-awaited cooking class. Or will they? Recent studies show that many Americans are staying on the job longer and pushing off retirement until they feel more comfortable with what's in the bank.

Those seeking steady employment in an interesting field may want to ride the current wave of opportunity experienced by the Merchant Marine. Employment Expected To Grow In Construction
Here's a fact that could be written in cement. Construction is and always has been one of the nation's leading industries and the backbone of the U.S. economy.
Construction is growing at a pace requiring 240,000 positions to be filled every year to keep up with the industry's growth and demands. The U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that from 2002-2012, the industry will create more than one million new jobs, making it the only goods-producing industry sector in which employment is expected to grow in those 10 years.

Smile, You're Hired!
Imagine working in a world where appearances ranked dead last when it came to making first impressions. Where hiring managers ignored your tired, bloodshot eyes or dark under-eye circles. Where supervisors disregarded your disheveled hair in favor of your pleasant personality. And where recruiters looked past your messy, wrinkled suit.

Reaching America’s Youth
With a labor shortage looming in the not-so-distant future, the need to train, educate and reach out to the youth of America will be essential to growing the work force. The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) recognizes this labor shortage as an opportunity to encourage youth, especially young women, to choose construction as a life-long career. This school year, the organization’s Education Foundation will deliver that message to children of all ages through a series of programs specially designed for specific age groups. The Block-Kids building program introduces elementary school-aged children to the construction industry in an effort to create an awareness of and to promote an interest in future careers in one of the many facets of the industry.

The New Office Water Cooler?
When you want to take a break and socialize with your co-workers during the work day, where do you go? People used to head straight to the water cooler to chat, gossip and share stories; but not so much anymore. The “water cooler” of the 21st century may just be the candy dish. According to the Life Savers Dish on Office Life survey (a national consumer poll of 1,290 adults who work in office settings), three out of every four offices share sweets -- and successes -- by having a candy dish somewhere in the office. Some are set up at the front desk, others in individual’s offices or cubes. No matter where they are, find them and you may find “the key” to a company’s success.

For Millions of People, Graduation Means ‘Welcome to the Rat Race!’
As the 1.3 million college graduates in the Class of 2005 exit academia for the work force -- armed with a sheepskin and laden with debt -- The Rich Dad Company, an educational products organization best known for its international best-selling book “Rich Dad Poor Dad,” offers this message: “Congratulations, grads -- and welcome to the rat race!” That debt -- $22,221 on average, as reported by Student Monitor LLC, a leading market research firm -- represents both credit card debt and student loans. Debt that, according to that company’s survey stats, will take eight years to pay off. And, in most cases, there’s more where that came from. It’ll take the shape of car loans, revolving credit and even mortgages.

Success in Job Interviews: Preparation and Presentation Are Key
Nearly everyone who has ever interviewed for a job can tell you a horror story that no amount of preparation or presentation could have avoided. But according to experts, being well-prepared, poised and enthusiastic can get you through even the most horrible job interview scenarios with your confidence intact. Diana Graves-Sharple, director of career services at The Art Institute of Atlanta, looks back at her own personal experience with a nightmarish job interview and can now laugh. “The interviewer, a sales manager, was an ex-pro football player and conducted much of the interview by shouting at me when he disapproved of my answers to his questions. After about 45 minutes of being brow-beaten, I was just looking for a way to get out of the building,” she recalls.

Youth Working In Construction
The construction industry continues to provide a growing number of job opportunities. Especially in the summer months, we see more teen workers employed in this field.

Summer job opportunities in construction may be the first job experience for some young people. The best way to make sure it is a rewarding experience is to be sure it's a safe and healthy one.

Under the Leadership of Secretary Elaine L. Chao, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) developed the YouthRules! campaign to promote positive, safe experiences for teen workers. YouthRules! provides valuable information online so that every employer, teen and parent has the ability to access information on youth employment rules.
