Positive Effects on Family Meal Time
It’s no secret that meal time can be a positive experience for families, but a recent Ore-Ida national survey discovered nearly half of moms feel stressed when planning the meal. The solution might be as easy as serving family favorites. In fact, eight out of 10 moms revealed that favorite foods are the secret to creating a positive effect on their families during meal time, followed by conversations, watching TV and activities or games.
Getting creative and serving foods both kids and parents enjoy can make meal time more fun. According to the survey, French fries were the number one choice among moms – more so than mashed potatoes, garlic bread, salad and veggies. It’s no wonder that one in three moms surveyed serve French fries at least once a week, and more than 90 percent serve them once a month or more.

It may come as a surprise but grandparents and other relatives are the primary caregivers for nearly six million children-and the numbers are growing. In fact, 75 percent of all nonparent care of children in America is now provided by grandparents. "Parenting is hard enough, but parenting the second time around can be even more of a challenge," says Herbert E. Mandell, M.D., medical director for the national children's crisis charity KidsPeace and the KidsPeace Children's Hospital.

Technology Helps Families Heal
Technology developed for business communications has helped some troubled families learn to talk to each other-and helped some troubled teens turn their lives around.
The decision to send a son or daughter away for treatment can be heart wrenching, even for parents with teenagers labeled "out of control." It can be especially difficult when the treatment center is far from home. For instance, at one treatment center for 12- to 17-year-olds, more than half of the 40 or so residents are from states far across the country-and the average parent can only visit every two to three months during the nearly yearlong program.

A Snapshot Of Today's American Family
What do today's families value? That may depend on whom you ask. While children, teens and adults may have different priorities, a recent survey by Grassroots™ and Harris Interactive found that family values appear to be strong despite the influence of pop culture and technology. Forty-six percent of parents say their families are tighter now than when they were children.

Families: Turn Crisis into Opportunity
Erin was spiraling out of control. She fought with her parents constantly. She was failing in school, drinking, smoking and running away. Things got so bad that now she was standing in front of a judge who was about to put her in a juvenile lockdown facility for the third time.
“At that time, all I could think about was running away,” says Erin. “My roommate at the lockdown facility and I were planning ways to get away. There were bars on the windows, sensors in the ceiling and locked doors. We didn’t care. We just wanted to run away.”

Help Us Find Moms Who Deserve Recognition
Moms have one of the most important jobs in America. On a daily basis, they raise our nation's kids, strengthen our neighborhoods and drive our economy. Each and every day, moms go above and beyond the call of duty to contribute their time and talents to better the lives of others.
To help celebrate extraordinary moms across the country, ClubMom, the free national membership organization for moms, has launched the “ClubMom Make a Difference” National Awards, a prestigious honor that recognizes the amazing work moms do every day to make a difference. Five moms who have made a difference in remarkable ways will be honored during the first annual “ClubMom Make a Difference” National Awards ceremony in New York City in May 2006.

The Importance of Family Dinners
The kitchen has long been touted as the heart of the home but recent studies show that consistent family dinners offer more than nourishment. A recent study released by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University found that the more often children have dinner with their parents, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use illegal drugs.
“It is vital that frequent family dinners become a permanent fixture for children, not only when they are young, but throughout their teenage years,” said Dr. Wade F. Horn, assistant secretary for Children and Families at the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services. “The frequency of family dinners decreases significantly as children enter and go through high school -- and that’s just when the benefits of family dinners may be needed most.”

Multi-Generational Latino Families Spur Economic Growth
As the numbers of multi-generational, bilingual Latino families grow in the United States, so will the demand for the products and services most appropriate to their tastes and needs.
For instance, according to James Johnson, a professor at the University of North Carolina, an uptick in Hispanic homebuyers is expected to drive the nation’s overall future housing growth. An estimated 10 million immigrants will reach their peak home-buying age of about 35 to 44 by 2015. And because Hispanic families often remain tightly knit with grandparents, parents and children of all ages under one roof, many of these homebuyers are requesting finished basements, first floor master bedrooms and accordion-style additions.
