Gardening: Knowing How to Start

Gardening can be a wonderful and rewarding experience if you know how to do it the right way. Otherwise, it can be a very frustrating and messy experience. You can end up with a relaxing haven filled with a tasteful arrangement of shrubs, trees and flowerpots or a collection of haphazardly arranged eyesores. Here are some tips on starting a garden of your own.

First, you need to be realistic. The lush gardens that you see on TV can make you pea green with envy but you cannot expect your garden to be in the same likeness as these masterpieces. By taking note of your garden’s size and location and accepting it for what it is, you can make a unique masterpiece of your own.

You should also be aware of your limitations. How much time can you allot for your garden? Gardening is supposed to be a relaxing hobby. It shouldn't add to your stress. Don't bite off more that you can chew. Otherwise, you might end up giving up on a hobby because of the headaches it has caused you.

Perhaps you should start small so that you wouldn't be overwhelmed. In gardening, baby steps can get you further than giant steps. You can begin by choosing a small spot in your front yard, preferably a section that you can view everyday. This way, you would be able to observe the growth of your plants. You can also opt for a container garden which is very easy to manage and to move around. This will allow you to experiment with different plants as well as the lighting of the different areas around your home.

Now that you have an idea how you would like to start your garden, you can now choose your first plant. In doing this, you need to find out the conditions in which the plant would need to thrive. If you have already chosen a spot for your new plant, you have to check if its location would provide it with the amount of sun exposure that it needs. Vegetable plants, for example, must be exposed to the sun six hours a day. You should also consider that the afternoon sun is more intense than the morning sun. This is the advantage of having a container garden, it’s easy to move it around and experiment with lighting.

After you have finalized your action plan, you can now get some supplies. Again, don't overwhelm yourself by buying every single gardening tool there is. Perhaps you can start with a pair of garden gloves, a shovel, a planter or some pots, some fertilizer and a hose. Now that you have everything you need for your first plant, you can now start working. Remember to take your time and enjoy the process. Plants are not meant to be hurried. They are meant to be nurtured and cherished.
