(NC)-The holiday season is upon us, and that usually means lots of last minute planning and shopping as holiday parties and gift exchanges fill up our calendars. Often, before we know it, the season is over, we're exhausted, and we haven't really enjoyed all that this time of year has to offer.

This year, take the time to really stop and appreciate the true meaning of the season. Ensure your time with friends and family is meaningful and fulfilling (and not too exhausting) with some of these thoughtful suggestions:

Don't book up your calendar with every invite

Your time is valuable - even during the holidays. Don't exhaust yourself by feeling obligated to accept invitations to every dinner, cocktail and holiday party you receive. Be choosy about how you spend your time instead of rushing from one event to another. You'll feel more relaxed, and you'll be a more attentive guest at the functions you do attend.

Choose holiday cards that give back

Sending holiday cards is a rich tradition, but often it's treated as another "task" on our list of things to do. This year, be more discerning with your card list by sending greetings to those who are nearest and dearest to you. That way you can spend more time writing thoughtful, personal messages to each recipient.

Better yet, why not send holiday cards that reflect the joy and beauty of the season, but also give back? For example, take a look at the cards that are published by Canada's Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (MFPA). They are one example of how you can send cards with meaning.

Each card is a reproduction of a festive scene created by artists who paint with brushes held in their mouths or feet as a result of disability sustained at birth, or through an accident or illness.

These holiday cards, along with other products such as desk/wall calendars, note cards, wrapping paper and even jigsaw puzzles and books support the artists directly and help them live independently.

They give true meaning to the season. More information is available online at www.mfpacanada.com.

Start new family traditions

Many of us have fond memories of holiday traditions that we cherish from when we were children. Why not add to these with a few new traditions that can help make the holidays even more special? For example, let children pick out a new ornament each year. Write their initials and the date on the bottom. Over the years, their collection will grow, and they'll have fun reminiscing over the baubles they chose when they were small.

Take some "me" time

Most importantly, take some time for yourself. Whether it's enjoying a book and a cup of tea, taking in a movie with friends, or playing with the kids in the snow, scheduling time to relax and have fun will help you appreciate all that the season has to offer.
