You can find many island treasures in the Caribbean. The islands are warm and inviting and beautiful. One island near the coast of South America is Barbados. It lies about 250 miles off the coast of Venezuela.
Barbados was a British colony and got its independence in 1966. Barbados is 165 square miles of low lying land, with rainforests, beautiful sandy beaches and tropical trade winds that make it a popular vacation spot.
The United Nations tells us that Barbados is the fourth most developed of all the developing countries in the entire world. The island is small, but it has a very high standard of living that most residents on it enjoy. You can be sure your trip to Barbados will be wonderful.
When you fly into Barbados you will land at Sir Grantley Adams International Airport. This airport is a major hub for the Caribbean, so you may fly in to catch a flight to another island or to hope on a cruise ship. If that is the case, you should try to stay an extra day or two so you can discover the fun and beauty Barbados has to offer.
As with any island vacation the best things to do in Barbados are centered around the beach. The water here is great for surfing. The Soup Bowl, located near the town of Bathsheba, has perfect waters for surfing and is very popular with the surf crowd.
For sunbathers the western and southern shores are most popular, there you can relax, lying on the pink sand beaches, and sunbathe.
Barbados offers much more than just beaches. There are duty-free tourist centers for shopping. There are wildlife reserves to visit. In July and August there are festivals that take place all over the island.
In fact the Crop Over Festival lasts from May to July. It began when the economy of Barbados was growing sugar cane, and there would be a huge celebration when the "Crop was Over".
You can learn a lot about the history, culture and music of Barbados at the Crop Over Festival, while at the same time having a great time enjoying the rhythm of the island.
If you want to learn about all the history of Barbados there are many other tourist attractions include: Farley Hill National Park, Animal Flower Cave, Hackleton’s Cliff, Sharon Moravian Church, Orchid World, Gun Hill Signal Station, Garrison Savannah, and Barbados Historical Museum.
When you travel to the islands there may be customs that you do not understand. The best way to really get to know and understand the island is by learning it's history. You may be pleasantly surprised at what you learn.
Is fishing your thing? Barbados offers fishing large and small year round. Fish include barracuda, tuna, wahoo, dolphin, and marlin. There are many tournaments for big game fishermen as well. Make sure to come to the island in the months between January and April to enter into one of these.
If you come to Barbados in October, which happens to be its peak tourist time, you can join in the fun of the Taste of Barbados Festival. It runs for a week and includes some of the most fabulous meals you will ever enjoy. Learn about the island, through its culinary delights during this festival. In 2007 it will run from October 5 to the 14.
Do I even have to mention water sports? Of course Barbados offers wind surfing, surfing, kayaking. scuba diving, boating, sailing, anything you could possibly want to participate in on your vacation.
You can choose to stay in a small town , or a larger one, depending on how much activity you want to participate in on your vacation. There are accommodations to fit every want or need. Large towns that in Barbados in which you can stay include Bridgetown, Speightstown, Holetown, and Oistins. Come to Barbados, and you may never want to leave.
