Brown's Cemetery

Cemeteries are places that seem to harbor the spirits of those whose bodies have succumbed to death. While some cemeteries seem to be quiet and all those whose mortal remains have been laid there seem to be resting in peace or have moved on from this version of the mortal plane...there are those cemeteries that seem to be very much 'alive' with activity. Brown's cemetery in northeastern Kentucky is one such cemetery.

My hubby and I have always enjoyed going to old cemeteries and looking at some of the headstones of bygone eras. Many are monuments to the awesome craftsmanship of the stone carver who made them...some are merely sad chunks of stone that mark the place of a loved one of a family too poor to afford more elaborate marker.

It is our experience that many cemeteries have ghostly activity in some parts of the graveyard, but there are many which have none. Brown's cemetery is not an old cemetery...but it is a very active one.

There have been many times that we have went into this particular cemetery just to check out the activity going on at any given time, and we were rarely ever disappointed. There is one particular grave of a young couple who died together in a car accident in either the late 70's or early 80's. There are pictures on the head stone of each of them and they are buried together.

Many times the grass will move in an odd way...making a sort of crackling noise as if someone who is invisible is walking across the graves. This has happened many times without any sort of wind or breeze to attribute it to. There are also people who have seen spectral figures and lights moving around in the cemetery at night.

The lights appear to be small balls of light flitting around the head stones. Some appear as a sort of greenish color while others seem to be a sort of bluish-white. The figures are more frightening though. There has been reported that here is the ghostly figure of a young man who is frightening and rather gruesome to behold. He was killed in a motorcycle accident back in the early 90s and was badly mangled.

Another specter that is often seen is that of a young woman who appears to wearing a bridal gown walking the paths of the cemetery. As I have little information about who this spirit might be, it does seem to that she died quite young and was engaged to married quite soon. Why or how she died is a mystery and research and investigation is still on going.

Why do some cemeteries seem to be quiet and peaceful while others have lots of unrest and activity in them? No one really seems to know. Perhaps these certain areas are door ways between realms allowing those who have physically died to come and go as they wish. Perhaps some are trapped here by the pain and grief of loved ones who cannot let go and keep returning to the place where the deceased's remain are buried.

Whatever the reasons, one thing remains...ghosts and the spirits seem to haunt the places where their remains are interred as well as, perhaps, the places they lived and loved while they were corporeal. Maybe, one day we will understand why.
