(NUI) - With the fast-paced lifestyle that many Americans lead today, it's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of society. We're constantly on the go in an effort to accomplish the day's tasks and, in essence, "have it all." While this attitude is ambitious, it can also take its toll - particularly on your feet.

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, the average person takes 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day. When you consider that adds up to 115,000 miles in a lifetime, matters of the foot are not to be taken lightly.

One of the most common causes of foot problems is improper footwear. In fact, women have approximately four times as many foot problems as men. Customary wearing of high heels is often the culprit.

Fortunately, the APMA, a useful resource for taking preventative measures against foot problems, has been hard at work on its Seal of Acceptance program for more than 30 years in an effort to recognize products that have been found beneficial to foot health. The Seal of Acceptance evaluates such products as footwear, insoles, socks and hosiery.

To be awarded the seal, companies must voluntarily submit their products to the APMA, where each committee member scientifically evaluates them. While the process is different for each product category, the studies generally consist of reviewing the toecap dimensions, lining material texture, durability, flexibility, slip resistance, shock absorption, heel height and stability, and comfort, among many other important qualities.

Not all footwear passes the test. Primarily, products that are mainly cosmetic, interfere with normal foot function or do not promote good foot health are rejected by the committee.

The APMA encourages consumers to evaluate footwear before making their final purchase. Have both of your feet measured while you are standing for a more accurate size and buy shoes later in the day when feet are at their largest due to swelling. The APMA also recommends avoiding shoes with heels that are more than two inches in height.
