For diabetics, regular check ups for their vision is recommended as they are particularly vulnerable to cataracts and damaged retinas due to lower blood flow around the eye.
Diabetes can also physically damage the tissue of the eye itself.
Though most diabetics will not experience any symptoms during the early stages of the disease, problems with vision and possibly total blindness is quite common with type 2 diabetes.
In the USA, most people termed “legally blind” suffer from type 2 diabetes.
While there could be other causes, early warning signs for diabetes could well be temporary paralysis of the muscles around the eyes.
It is best that when you experience double or blurred vision, you consult a doctor to eliminate or confirm diabetes and the type it is.
A simple test for blood sugar will suffice. With early and proper diagnosis, and with proper attention, deterioration of the sight can be delayed and perhaps even prevented.
If you are a diabetic, you can protect your vision from getting affected by regular monitoring of your blood sugar levels and to maintain them at reasonable levels. Since problems with vision arise due to either excess or low blood sugar levels, frequent checks will prevent such fluctuations.
Regular exercise and proper diet as developed for you by your doctor and your dietician will keep your weight under control and also help you maintain the sugar levels at satisfactory levels.
Under normal conditions, most people do not experience any symptoms in the early stages of deteriorating vision. Since an optometrist can detect early signs of degeneration of vision due to diabetes, yearly visits to him for dilated eye examination will help you in preserving your eye sight and if necessary also to control your diabetes.
Such examinations will ensure that timely corrective action is taken so that further deterioration is not experienced. If you do not get this done regularly as a routine, your eyesight can experience serious damage.
Just following these courses of action can substantially reduce the chances of your vision deteriorating into blindness due to diabetes. You will also experience better physical and emotional health. Most people associate diabetes with physical symptoms.
While this is indeed true to a large extent, anxiety, dementia and psychosis are also possible results of uncontrolled blood sugar levels. Despite sounding alarming, diabetes can be treated and controlled easily and if diagnosed early enough, it need not be so frightening.
In the case of vision getting affected due to diabetes, there is hope in the form of laser correction. Macular edema, glaucoma and cataracts are also possible complications arising out of diabetes.
All these can be diagnosed and controlled before serious damage is done by regular examination of the eyes combined with proper diet and exercise.
