These tips for psoriasis can help you to help your teenager.

(NC)-As a teenager, you to want to look your best, so trying to hide the red scaly patches of psoriasis is only natural. If, however, you appear afraid of being asked about your skin condition, your classmates will sense your fear too.

School friends can often be too blunt, insensitive and bullying - and if you stress about this, the psoriasis outbreaks could get worse. Here are some quick tips to rise above it - and prevail:

. Confidence: Next time you're asked: where did you get that on your skin? Answer: "The same place you got your curly hair and brown eyes. I inherited it."

. Remove Fear: Negative reactions are caused by fear and lack of understanding. Psoriasis is not contagious, so tell those who ask that it's passed down through families. Psoriasis happens because the process of the skin renewing itself goes too fast and this leads to outbreaks of red patches.

. You're Not Alone: Psoriasis affects 2 to 4 percent of the population with around 30 percent being teenagers, so you are not abnormal.

. Don't Suffer In Silence: If classmates make you feel embarrassed or upset and angry, talk to a favourite teacher and to your parents. You haven't done anything to deserve your condition and so it's unfair that you should be bullied. All it may take is for teachers to educate students on the harmlessness of psoriasis.

. Treatment Options: One of the best choices is an all-natural herbal ointment and cream rather than cortisone-steroid creams. Particularly effective is Mahonia aquifolium (sold in Canada as PsoEcze Care), a non-drug, herbal treatment with no known side-effects. It has shown to relieve and improve psoriasis and eczema for more than 82 percent of those tested. Information is online at goapharma.com.

If psoriasis is treated in the right way, and you avoid scratching, there should be no permanent scarring. Although you might feel depressed about your condition now, try to stay positive and remember that the outbreak is not likely to last for long.
