It is well known that diabetes and obesity go hand in hand. The chances that you will develop diabetes go significantly higher if you are overweight or obese. Getting rid of that excess weight whether you are a diabetic or not is a great idea.

Insulin may sometimes reduce sugar levels in the blood by more than necessary. In such emergency cases, recourse to snacks like hard candy or a soft drink must be taken without however making it a habit.

Dieticians advise diabetics to eat all kinds of foods, even carbohydrates. Even diabetics need carbohydrates to stay healthy. The aim of controlled diet for diabetics is to reduce the amount of calories and processed sugars consumed and not to cut out any specific food.

The correct assortment of food items, quantity and frequency of intake will help you reduce your body weight gradually.

A daily dose of physical exercise is strongly recommended. The more the better but at least three times a week of thirty minutes duration each will do wonders. Though five days will be even better!

Brisk exercises like walking, jogging, aerobic exercises etc are all acceptable. To avoid dehydration, consume a lot of liquids while exercising. While normal people may take sports drinks and other sweet drinks, diabetics should avoid these.

The best is plain simple water for diabetics. There is no sugar in it and you can also avoid dehydration. It is a good idea to monitor your blood sugar levels before and after such exercise to avoid any unpleasant developments like a sudden drop in sugar levels after a bout of exercise.

In such cases quick fix solutions like the intake of a handy snack must be taken recourse to.

Weight loss is not recommended only for diabetics. The advice given above is applicable to everyone who is overweight or obese.

All can benefit from a healthy diet and exercise.

With obesity and diabetes even among children reaching epidemic proportions, it is now becoming vital that adults become role models and get their children away from sedentary occupations like video games and watching television, into outdoor games and increased activities.

Encourage them to accompany you on your walks or runs. You will be surprised at their enthusiasm. Thus both adults and children can live healthier lives.
