(ARA) - While fall travel has long focused on mountain and city vacations, one in three travelers plans to skip the fall foliage this year in favor of a trip to the beach.
A recent survey of visitors to Beaches of South Walton, Fla., found that off-peak travel to traditional “summertime” destinations is on the rise. Respondents said they were just as likely to take a beach vacation in September or October as they were during the peak summer months.
“Travelers are increasingly finding that the fall is a delightful time to visit the beach,” says Kriss Titus, executive director of the Walton County Tourist Development Council. “The days are crisp and sunny and the humidity tends to drop. Plus the beaches, hotels, and restaurants are much less crowded.”
To celebrate the joys of autumn beach travel, the 13 scenic communities of Beaches of South Walton each year fill their fall calendars with a festive array of events. From art auctions and wine tastings to fun runs and film fests, Autumn Tides highlights the best of the coast for visitors of all ages.
In its fourth year, Autumn Tides has grown since its beginnings in 2002. Since then, attendance at the annual festival has skyrocketed, as events become more diverse and creative.
“Autumn Tides has become a must-do for a whole new set of travelers,” says Titus. “In the fall we see more mature travelers, empty nesters and couples without children dictating their travel schedules coming to the beach to beat the heat -- and the crowds.”
Autumn Tides events include the Sandestin Art Expo at Baytowne Wharf in Sandestin; the MountainFilm Festival at WaterColor; the Celebrations of Heritage Festival at Silver Sands Factory Stores; Chair Affair (like the cow parade) in Seaside; Southern Breeze Coastal Wine Tour in Rosemary Beach; and the Flutterby Festival in Santa Rosa Beach.
