NUI) - Rebates can be great. After all, you are getting money back, and it's fun to get a check in the mail instead of bills every now and then. But rebates also can be time consuming. You have to remember all sorts of steps and you're never sure if you did everything correctly.

To help with the rebate process, here are a few tips from the experts at Best Buy:

* Send it immediately. You should always send rebate requests right away. If you don't, you might forget to send them or lose some of the crucial documents you need to get your cash. In most cases, rebate requests must be received by a certain date or they will not be honored.

* Be patient. Don't get in too much of a hurry when it comes to rebates. Most rebates can take up to eight weeks for a response. But before you call the store to ensure they received your request, be sure to identify if it was a store rebate or a manufacturer's rebate. That step alone can save you time and potential frustration.

* Remember the three key documents: the universal product code, the rebate form and a copy of your receipt. Sometimes, rebates require special forms, like proof you live in a certain area, but almost every rebate requires the UPC, the rebate form and a copy of the receipt, so make sure you have these three key items. Some stores, like Best Buy, will give you an additional receipt specifically for rebate purposes.

* Copy, copy, copy. Make copies of everything you send so if something gets lost in the mail, you'll be prepared.

* Get the forms at purchase. Remember to get all necessary forms when you are in the store. You do not want to go back later because they may run out of forms or the promotion may end.

* Get online receipts. If you purchase something online, remember to get a paper receipt, either by printing one off of the Web or by requesting one be sent to you via mail. Best Buy actually has a Web page where you can request a hard copy of your online receipt.

* Check the status. If you think something might be wrong or you just need the money to make rent, check on your rebate with the company. Some stores offer a special hotline that allows you to check on your rebate's status instantly, like Best Buy at 1-888-BESTBUY.

With these tips, redeeming your next rebate can be a smooth process.
