(NUI) - Whether you're heading on a drive across the country, taking in the sights of your favorite major city, or backpacking with friends through Europe, you know that one of the most important steps in your travel planning is packing.

No matter how difficult it may be, the No. 1 rule is to pack lightly. Whether you drive or fly, learning to be a savvy, low-maintenance traveler is the key to a hassle-free trip.

Keep in mind that vacations are meant to be pleasant. So, while you shrink the size of your luggage, you don't have to trade in the good stuff. Opt for these clever and low-cost solutions when packing your essentials:

* If you're a frequent traveler, you can leave most of the travel-size products on the shelf. Make a one-time purchase of empty re-usable bottles and fill with your favorite toiletries, like shampoo, lotion, hairspray and shaving cream.

* An alternative to padlocks and key locks for luggage is split key rings. They are inexpensive, easy to find and inhibit thieves. Plus, you don't have to remember where you put the key or what the combination is.

* If you're going to be on a long flight or in the passenger's seat of a car, pack earplugs, a pampering eye mask and a comfortable neck pillow. It can really make a difference.

* If possible, pack just one pair of shoes. Remember, when traveling, comfort is essential. Bring shoes that you can walk around in all day, yet are stylish enough for an evening out.

* Keep a multipurpose tool handy. Even though you can't take a Swiss Army pocket tool from Victorinox on the plane with you, pack it in your suitcase if you are checking in your baggage or are driving to your destination. The Signature tool includes a collapsible ballpoint pen, scissors, a nail file, and tweezers or a toothpick. It's also a key ring, so you can attach your keys and carry it with you while you tour.

With a little creativity and a few compact items like these, packing light can actually be fun. For more information on the Victorinox Signature tool, visit www.victorinox.com.
