(NC)-A man told his neighbour, "I just bought a new hearing aid. It cost me four thousand dollars, but it's state of the art. It's perfect." "Really," answered the neighbour. "What kind is it?" "Oh, about half-past-twelve."

While this joke might make you chuckle, hearing impairment is not a laughing matter to thousands of Canadians who are beginning to feel and hear the first signs of hearing loss.

According to a recent survey by The Canadian Hearing Society, 23 per cent or one-in-four adult Canadians report some degree of hearing loss. Furthermore, as we watch the graying of Canada's boomer generation, that number is expected to climb.

Some of the possible signs of hearing loss in adults include: speaking louder than necessary in conversation; constantly asking for words to be repeated; turning up the television or radio so loud that others complain; and having difficulty hearing on the telephone.

Recognizing the need for products and services catering to the growing number of hearing-impaired Canadians, Thomson multimedia recently launched a number of GE-branded home phones designed to help people better communicate. With their sleek designs, the TC27906GE1, and the TC27907GE1, help enhance hearing, without compromising on design.

Both phones are hearing aid compatible and have oversized ear seals, helping to block out extra background noise which lets you concentrate on your conversation. In addition, both phones feature 'Big Buttons'- larger than most phones - that are easier to see and use. Both models also have a 'visual ringer' that lets you not only hear, but 'see' that you've got an incoming call. In addition, the 'audio boost' feature on these phones lets you easily adjust the volume for improved hearing.

The TC27907GE1 not only features options that help to make hearing better while using the telephone, but this model also comes equipped with DECT 6.0 technology, which allows your phone to operate without the interference from appliances such as microwaves and baby monitors. This GE model also includes a digital answering system with a digital message counter, handset speakerphone and is expandable up to four handsets.

The TC27906GE1 is available at Staples, London Drugs, Sears, Zellers, The Source, Canadian Tire and Wal-Mart. The TC27907GE1 is available at London Drugs and Sears.

If you've started to experience any signs of hearing loss, best to speak to your doctor. More information on telephones that can help you hear and communicate better is available online at www.ge.com/phones.
