(NewsUSA) - In today's environmentally conscious world, it's clear that recycling has become more than just a trendy, passing phase. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the popularity -; and necessity -; of recycling everyday materials has grown dramatically in less than 20 years.
The EPA reports that today, Americans recycle 32.5 percent of their waste. This number is almost double what it was 15 years ago, proving that consumers are understanding the value of recycling everyday materials more than ever before.
With that in mind, it should satisfy many that one of the biggest creators of waste -; shipping products -; has an ally in the fight to go green.
For those who receive a package by mail and wonder what to do with the plastic peanuts left in the box, there's now an environmentally friendly answer.
The Peanut Hotline, a reuse program started by the Plastic Loose Fill Council, gives consumers a place to drop off packing peanuts for reuse. Additionally, Pak Mail packing and shipping centers across the country have teamed up with the Plastic Loose Fill Council to reuse the packing peanuts collected by the program.
As the most successful packaging reuse program in the country, the Peanut Hotline directs consumers to the nearest location that accepts plastic loose fill products for reuse.
So far, the program has referred over 1 million consumers to local businesses near them that help to further the cause. The program allows an average Pak Mail store to save more than 50 percent on the cost of new loose fill purchases.
"It's our hope that consumers will continue to access the Peanut Hotline to recycle packing products and use Pak Mail to further promote the use of those recycled materials," said Rhonda Knight, Direcor of Marketing at Pak Mail.
