When someone is diagnosed with the disease of diabetes, he tends to feel that the choice of food items that he can consume will drastically reduce.
To some extent this is true in that you cannot eat what a non-diabetic person will. It does not however mean a total ban to good food.
Much information is available on the Internet on a variety of diets for diabetics. We shall give some useful information here to enable you to have happy meals.
Besides what you eat, it is more important that you change your patterns of how you eat.
For diabetes and hypoglycemia, the patterns are different. Diabetics need to eat more frequently of less quantity. A minimum of six meals a day is desirable - breakfast, a midmorning snack, lunch, an afternoon snack, dinner and then a late evening snack.
Diabetics actually require fewer calories in their food but they need to maintain their blood sugar levels at constant level. Doctors also suggest that the eating pattern and quantities remain constant from day to day to maintain blood sugar levels at a constant state.
Generally speaking, even for non-diabetic people, processed refined sugar is not advisable and for a diabetic, it is a total taboo. So, that must be first off your list of don’ts.
There are a number of sugar free substitutes now available in diet drinks and foodstuffs. Many grocers offer special sections storing special sugar free items such as, cookies, candies etc, for diabetics and sugar sensitive individuals.
Instead of going on crash diets, learn to eat healthy foods such as whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables, eliminating sugar altogether.
Such an attitude will result in your giving up burgers and fries without much pain and instead, eating at home. Sugar substitutes like Splenda can be used in making desserts. You can have a sweet tasting dessert without the harmful effects of normal sugar.
The most important aspect of a controlled diet is to go easy. Switch to light sauces, low fat dressings and spreads and used skimmed milk instead of full cream. You can eat starches provided they are light.
Choose pretzels, baked potatoes and whole grain bread over fries and greasy potato chips. Starches, the right ones, are good for everyone, even diabetics.
There is no need to eliminate starches from your diet. They are carbohydrates. You can have a wide choice full of flavor and nourishment in green or cooked vegetables, fresh fruits, low fat yogurt and sour cream.
You will start feeling better and healthier with such a diet and your blood sugar level will stay constant. Without the intake of unhealthy foods full of sugar and fat, you will be able to maintain yourself better.
Combined with exercise, such food habits will enable you to live a long and fruitful life despite being a diabetic.
