Reiki is healing and wellbeing using universal energy. Reiki heals and assists the process of healing by recovering spiritual, physical, mental and emotional balance and energy.
Since its beginnings, it has grown worldwide as people search for alternative healing therapy. Even though many have heard about Reiki they are unaware of the where, how, when and who on the origins of Reiki.
Reiki has existed for a long time, passed on by oral tradition from generation to generation. With the disruptive events of World War II, much of Reiki’s documented writings and history were lost.
Today’s Reiki owes its existence to Dr. Mikao Usui, who founded Reiki in the late nineteenth century. According to common knowledge, Dr. Usui was a minister and teacher at a Christian school, though there are claims to him being a Christian monk. It is said that his quest for healing began due to a student’s question, regarding how Jesus healed with miracles.
There are those, however, who disclaim his Christianity, like Dave King and his studies that state Usui as being a Buddhist. These sources also claim that both Dr. Hayashi and Mrs. Takata, who succeeded Usui in continuing Reiki, added the Christian element for it to be acceptable to Christian audiences in Europe, America, Canada and other parts of the world.
Continuing the quest, it is said that Usui began travelling to find an answer to Jesus’ healing technique. Even after many years of researching and learning Christian doctrines, books and schools he had no answer to his quest. Certain beliefs state that Usui turned to Buddhism after he failed with Christianity, since Buddha also healed and performed miracles.
He is said to have entered and studied at monasteries, talking to and learning from monks and ultimately resorting to meditation. Usui was convinced that in-depth meditation would provide the understanding he sought.
To achieve this, he fasted for twenty-one days on Japan’s Mount Kurama, instructing the monks to follow him and claim his body if he did not return to the monastery after twenty-one days.
Stories circulated that Usui had received a revelation during the retreat, which gave him the knowledge he had quested after, for so long. On his return he was able to heal and save people with all kinds of diseases and illnesses.
As he healed, he taught them to appreciate life and gratitude for what life offered. From him Reiki methods passed to Chujiro Hyashi. Hawayo Takata from Hawaii learned from Hyashi and promoted Reiki in the U.S. Her granddaughter, Phyllis Lei Furumoto spread Reiki to Canada, Europe and the rest of the world. Thanks to Mrs. Takata, World War II that wiped out so much did not wipe out Reiki as well.
Reiki has a mystic history along with many variations of the accounts and explanations of its practices. No matter what the fact, Reiki has continued to grow and win supporters to its cause as a truly God given healing form, given to everyone, provided they truly believe.
