(NC)-There are criminals on the loose and chances are they've got pimply faces and wear pocket protectors. Their crime? One is infecting your computer with worms and viruses. The other is doing something even worse: he's trying to steal your personal information from your computer. He designs programs that find their way to unprotected computers, which then send him back stolen information like passwords. From there he can access your banking and other important personal information.

To keep these two criminals out of your life, follow these five simple, but highly effective steps:

1. First and foremost, install reliable anti-virus software - These programs will protect your computer from malicious attacks from outside sources. A great place to start is with Symantec's Norton Anti-Virus or Norton Internet Security.

2. Update your anti-virus software often - Most programs have automatic updates, or display reminders to update your software. By doing this you will be protected against the latest Internet threats.

3. Be aware of suspicious e-mail - If you receive an e-mail from an address you do not recognize do not open it.

4. Ensure that you are using a firewall - A firewall is a main line of defence against hackers and identity thieves. It monitors all information coming into your computer and leaving your computer, automatically blocking harmful traffic.

5. Use common sense - Don't give away personal information to sites you don't think you can trust; don't open e-mail attachments from unknown senders; and make sure you get immediate protection by having your anti-virus program start when you start-up your computer.

By following these easy steps you will avoid having those pimply-faced criminals stealing vital information from your computer.
