Eco Tourism concept was evolved in the eighties, with no specific definitions or the concept of eco tourism.

There are three core characteristics that are usually associated with the concept of eco tourism

1). Relation to natural environment.
2). Educational and appreciative motive.
3). Sustainability.

How ever eco tourism society defines it as “ RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL TO NATURAL AREAS” Which should result into CONSERVATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND IMPROVES THE WELFARE OF THE LOCAL PEOPLE.

A walk in the rain forest is not Eco tourism un less that walk benefits that environment and the people who live there or showing tigers in the wild is not eco tourism its only commercial exploitation. The benefit should first go to the first people of the land and there after to the settlers of the land and then to the service providers.

The international eco tourism society having the head quarters at Washington dc, USA laid down following guidelines for sustainable eco tourism for any country, which is planning to have eco tourism as one of the main stays.

1). Minimize impact

2). Build environmental and cultural
awareness and respect.

3). Provide positive experiences for the
visitors and hosts.

4). Provide direct financial benefits for
conservation.
5). Provide financial benefit and
empowerment for local people
6). Raise sensitivity to host countries
political, environmental and social
climate.
7). Support international human rights and
labour agreements.

United Nation’s Environment Programme (UNEP) recognized following: Eco tourism is sustainable tourism based on the following principles.

1). Ensures prior informed participation of
all stakeholders.

2). Ensures equal, effective and active
participation of all stakeholders,

3). Acknowledges indigenous peoples
communities rights to say “no” to
tourism development and to be fully
informed, effective and active
participants in the development of
tourism activities with in the
communities, lands and territories

4). Promotes processes for indigenous
peoples and local communities to
control and maintain their resources.

Information Sri Srinivas Ayyadevara report in FAPCCI 14th September 2004.

ECO TOURISM BENEFITS

1). Conversion of Conventional Tourists to eco tourism due to orientation, which result in to conservation of natural places.

2). Attracts desirable clientele.

3). Increase income and employment to the local people.

4). Encourages depressed local people.

5). Stimulates rural infrastructure development.

6). Earns fund for natural resources Conservation and development.

7). Builds political support for nature conservation.

8). Increase awareness of environmental issues.

9). Generate foreign exchange.

10). Increase in Foreign payments of domestic taxes.

11). Least investment required.

Well! when all these good things will happen. Only when more and more people visit natural places near by their place of stay, city, state and country. Then once you develop taste for the eco-tourism then tour your specific interested areas all over the world to enjoy it better which may full fill eco-tourism objectives. Start writing to me on the new potential places in your area, which you have visited, and about there attractions. So that we can study it further on the subject for its development.
