All babies cry. It is normal. They are born, and start to cry. The first cry helps him get air into his lungs for the very first time.

A baby cannot tell you what he wants or needs, so he cries whenever he wants anything. When he is hungry or his diaper is soiled, when he is hot or cold. The only other thing he can do is kick, wave his little hands, but we do not know what these signals mean yet. Give it a little time, Mom, and you will learn. Your baby will also learn that when he cries he gets some attention.

Some babies are very fussy, and others are not. We don't know why, and when it is your baby it won't matter. When he fusses and cries you will want to take care of him. You want him to be happy and comfortable. You will soon learn what his cries mean, because they are different. Some mean he is hungry, and that will be every four or so hours. When you get him on a schedule you will begin to recognize those hunger cries.

When babies wet or soil their diaper, they cry. No one wants to be laying around in that mess, so he lets you know. Hey Mom, it's time to change my diaper.

Here are a few more reasons your baby may cry:

1. Your baby is hungry
This is number one on the list for a good reason. Your baby is going to be hungry a lot. Imagine all the food he will need to do the amazing amount of growing he is going to do in this next year!

2. Wet or soiled diaper
This is definitely number two on the list, because of number one. He will eat a lot, and he will go a lot.

3. Your baby wants company
Babies need and want your company. They want to be stimulated, and be able to see what is going on. Babies can get bored.

4. Your baby is tired
If your baby is tired and can't go to sleep he is going to get fussy, and cry! You can try rocking him or rubbing him so he can relax and fall asleep.

5. Your baby is not comfortable
If your baby is hot, or cold, he is going to let you know. You can feel his hands and feet to tell if he is cold. If he is hot, he may be perspiring. Just add or remove some clothing, and that should make him feel better.

6. Loud noises
Loud noises can startle and scare your baby. I don't mean normal noises, like the stereo, I mean a loud bang. If you drop something, if someone screams or yells, these types of noises will scare the baby, just as they would scare you.

7. Your baby has gas
Make sure you are burping your baby after every ounce of bottle he drinks. He can get gas quickly and needs to be burped often.

Here we are just talking about normal fussy crying, not screaming. If your baby cries all the time, he may have colic. Doctors don't really know what colic is, just that babies do get it. You should talk to him about it and perhaps he can give you some suggestions as what to do about it. A sign that it is colic is crying at the same time everyday.

You may be able to comfort him by walking or rocking with him and patting his back. Maybe you can sing him to sleep. Always stay patient with your baby, and if you feel upset, you can put him down, let him cry by himself while you step away and get your nerves back together. It can be very upsetting to a new mother when her baby cannot be comforted. You will just have to have patience and the colic will end in a few months.

Make sure your baby is fed, clean and comfortable. If the crying continues, ask your doctor about other possibilities. Make sure the baby is not crying in pain or discomfort of that sort.

As I said earlier, as you spend more time with your baby, you will learn what his cries mean, and understand them. You will be able to give him exactly what comfort or care he needs.
