A Month of Eco-Savvy

Help save the Earth and give our children a better home for the future.

Do one action a day, and once you’ve done one, just cross it off the list.

1) Choose organic groceries.

2) Buy food that's produced in your area.

3) Make no purchases for an entire day; you can do this weekly.

4) Prioritize recycled goods.

5) Avoid packaging; look for establishments that let you to bring your own bottles for liquid soap or oil.

6) Replace paper napkins for washable cloth ones.

7) Train your family to use only one mug per person for the entire day. You’ll save on water, washing time and electricity.

8) Instead of paper towels, mop up spills with terry cloth or microfiber.

9) Pick a high quality reusable microfiber mop and give up toxic cleaners.

10) Don’t leave the faucet running while you are brushing your teeth, shaving or soaping.

11) Shut off all overhead lights and lamps when no one is in the room.

12) Switch to beef that’s organically raised on real grass; don’t support inhumane animal growers.

13) Opt for the wild-caught salmon, not the farmed ones.

14) Once a week, prepare one completely vegetarian meal.

15) Avoid using disposable cups by carrying a washable mug for your beverages.

16) Stay away from unhealthy snacks and their wasteful packaging by being prepared with healthy goodies.
.
17) Bring your own shopping bags when you do your grocery and say no to plastic.

18) Rather than throw your old electronic items away, sell them online.

19) Donate unnecessary items to charity, or tap a recycling organization like Freecycle.org.

20) Search online for book swap groups so you can dispose of those you don’t want to keep.

21) Replace busted light bulbs with compact fluorescent energy saving ones.

22) Save energy when doing the wash. First completely dissolve your detergent in warm water, then mix with cold water to do laundry. The resulting clean will be identical.

23) Do all of your payments through the Internet.

24) In fact, perform all of your bank transactions online to minimize paper waste.

25) Select playthings made of durable wood or eco-friendly materials; forget plastic.

26) Children don’t really need toys to play with; let them use their creativity and buy less.

27) It's not enough to turn off your appliances; unplug them. Appliances consume electricity as long as they are plugged in, even when inactive.

28) The refrigerator’s coil radiates heat. Clean it regularly or it will use up more energy to keep cool.

29) Maintain a lint-free filter in the clothes dryer.

30) Save energy by using the dryer less and clothesline more.

31) Wait for a full load of clothes or dishes before activating your washers. Do your delicate laundry by hand.

Remember that protecting the environment is supposed to feel good. Approach these tasks as a game and you and your family will be 100% eco-savvy in no time.
