(NUI) - Have you ever looked at an old coin or an antique and wondered where has it been, who had it in their hands or where has it traveled?

These questions will never be answered for sure, but every old coin - whether it is a silver dollar or a $20 gold coin from the 1800s - holds a story.

When I was a boy, I collected coins. And every time I got another one, I would wonder who had it before me or who got it from the bank in Nevada in 1883.

I do know from studying reference books that old western cowboys loved silver dollars and gold coins. The coins were big and solid and represented their value by their weight. They were so appealing that Jesse James robbed banks for Morgan Silver Dollars.

In the last couple of decades, many prominent celebrities, actors and athletes have assembled famous collections of coins.

One of the most famous collectors was King Farouk. About two years ago, a 1933 $20 Saint Gaudens Gold Coin sold for more than $7.5 million. The sale made all the headlines, and the coin came from Farouk's collection.

Obviously, anyone, regardless of age, income bracket or marital status, can be a coin collector.

Even if you have never collected coins before, learning to collect is really quite simple. Collecting can be mentally stimulating, and some of the history can be educational. Plus, if you hold on to your coins long enough, they can be quite profitable.

How would someone start to collect coins? To make it simple, Walking Liberty Inc. has a special supply of uncirculated $20 gold coins available for only $695.

And a great offering of estate coins is available from Missouri, a known James Gang hideout. These estate coins are uncirculated Morgan Silver Dollars. They can be purchased for $24.95 each with a three coin minimum.

To get these coins or to fill a want list, call Walking Liberty Inc. at 1-877-COINMAN or 1-877-264-6626.

Norman Martin has been a professional numismatist (coin expert) for the past seven years. He has collected coins for the past 34 years.
