You don't need research studies to see that more people are overweight. You can see this by walking around your neighborhood and just looking at everyone you see. Sometimes it is easier to see in other people than it is to see in yourself. Even when you look in the mirror you may not see it, but a scale will tell you the truth.

If you are overweight there are many different approaches you can take to correct this. You can take pills or supplements, but are these always healthy? We hear everyday stories about the bad ways over the counter weight loss products have hurt people. You can go to your doctor, and he may prescribe a weight loss medication for you, but usually when you stop taking these the weight goes back on.

You can join an exercise class. These usually meet at least once a week, and will be full of people with the same goal as you. It is nice to have some support when your trying to lose weight.

Usually the cause of your weight gain is very simple, you over eat. You eat the wrong foods, or just too much of it. The best way to correct this is to learn how to eat properly. Most Americans over eat because they do not know how large a portion of food is. We tend to think if its bigger its better. That doesn't apply when we are talking about serving sizes.

If you go on a diet it doesn't mean you have to give up all the foods you love. It just means you have to eat less of them. You can enjoy all food groups on a diet but you must eat them in moderation. Too much of a good thing can be bad! Just look at your belly.

In the past several years you have seen all kinds of different diet plans. They come and go in and out of fashion. We all remember the Atkin's Diet, The Power Protein Diet,The South Beach Diet.

These diets all seem to follow the rule that eating too many carbohydrates can cause people to become overweight. They encourage dieters to use a low carb diet and to eat smaller meals to encourage weight loss.

All our bodies are composed of nutrients. We get these in the forms of carbohydrates, fat and protein. We get the nutrients from the food we eat. To get energy our bodies use the carbohydrates first. If you use a diet plan that restricts carbs and is concentrated on eating more protein and fats, the body will burn the fat that it has stored for energy and you will lose weight.

In a recent study it was seen that it is much easier to lose weight if you are using a low carb diet as compared to a low fat diet. The study showed that people who followed a low carb diet were able to lose more weight compared to people who chose the low fat diet. This low carb approach also can help lower the cholesterol levels.

The focus of a low carbohydrate diet is on eating more protein for one to lose weight. Some doctors have concerns that this type of diet can damage the bones because of high levels of calcium it can cause in a persons system. Some doctors also believe that if you take away most of the fiber in foods it could cause complications from the liver, kidney and perhaps heart disease. None of these fears have been proven to be true.

Diet pills and over the counter diet supplements have many side effects, but dieting does not. If you decide to use any supplements or pills always make sure you talk to your doctor about them. In fact, you should discuss all your dieting plans with him as well.

If you decide to go on a diet you should also begin an exercise program. It doesn't have to be a hot and heavy workout, you can begin by walking a few blocks. Dieting always works better when you exercise in some way. Walking is a simple way to start and will not be too tiring for you. In fact, it will help to give you some extra energy.

The ideal weight loss program should incorporate all the vitamins and minerals required by the human body daily. A good breakfast is also important to anyone who is dieting. You cannot skip meals, as that signals the body to hold on to the fat it has.

You can change the diet you choose to incorporate things you enjoy or eliminate things you don't like. Just make sure you stick to the basic principles of the diet you have chosen. You can find many books and articles on diets so you can research them and pick the one that will work for you.

You can get a book of recipes or find some on the Internet to make your meals different. Sometimes the boredom of eating the same things gets to us, and makes it easy for us to be tempted by foods not on our diet plan.
