(NC)-The one-two punch of cold weather and indoor heating wreaks havoc on winter hair, leaving it dry, dull and prone to damage.
Combine that with the holiday party circuit and you're left with a less-than-merry 'do dilemma.
For soiree-worthy locks, take a look at these winter hair-care tips from Sunsilk at gethairapy.ca:
1. Think before you shampoo
Hot water and detergents found in some shampoos can dry out hair. Look for nourishing, anti-static shampoos and conditioners specially formulated to fortify hair for winter. Shampooing using warm or cool water will help keep locks shiny, too.
2. Don't skimp on conditioner
Be sure to use conditioner every time you wash your hair. Apply it to the ends and leave it on for a few minutes, then rinse with cool water to lock in moisture. Once a week, use a heavier moisturizer for a deep conditioning treatment. Wrapping your hair in a towel or plastic bag for 10 minutes creates a warm, humid environment that will allow the conditioner to penetrate deeply.
3. Cut early and cut often
Dry hair starts at the ends, so get a jump-start on winter with a good cut, then schedule more frequent trims throughout the season.
4. Don't give your hair the freeze
Wet hair can freeze if it's cold enough outside, so leaving the house with wet tresses can risk breakage.
5. Use heat wisely
Blow-dryers, curling wands and straightening irons can be winter hair's enemy. If you use a hair dryer, towel dry your hair first, then use a warm or cool - not hot - setting. Hold the dryer as far as you comfortably can from your head.
6. Eat well
You are what you eat, and that goes for your hair, too. A balanced diet and plenty of water - at least eight 8-ounce (250 mL) glasses each day can improve hair's quality and shine.
7. Hydrate in your sleep
Turning on a humidifier at night will not only help prevent dry scalp, but help heal and moisturize dry skin.
8. Stop static flat
Anti-static sprays can be used on hair after styling or inside hats and hoods to combat the hair-raising effects of static. Using a natural bristle brush or wide-tooth comb will also help.
9. Wear a hat
Scarves and hats protect your hair from the cold and wind. Make sure yours fit properly so that they don't restrict scalp circulation. And be sure to clean your wool hats regularly.
10. Don't put up with hat head
Apply a volumizing mousse to the roots of your hair in the morning. Once you arrive at your destination, remove your hat, flip your head upside down and massage your scalp. This will help reactivate the product and lift your hair.
