They say that patience is a virtue. However, nothing is worse and more annoying than waiting for a web site to load. Of course, there are some things that you can do so that your web site will have a quick load time.

The first method for decreasing your web site's load time is to decrease the size of any images that you are using. This is important because pictures can inhibit a web site's speed. Nevertheless, there are some web sites wherein pictures are essential. However, if you keep these pictures to a minimal size it will help to improve your web site's speed.

One way in which you can “shrink” large graphic files is by using an image splitter, such as Picture Dicer, to cut them into smaller pieces before putting them back together again.

Of course, you can also use thumbnails to point to larger images. Your user can then click on which picture they want to see so that all of the other pictures remain small and the larger picture will load for them.

Another method that you can use to improve your web site's loading time is to cut down or eliminate Flash intros. While these may look great, they take way too much time to load and this can make you loose a lot of traffic. This can also be said about Java Script. If you do not need it, then leave it out. You really do not want to add another reason for your site to be slow.

Any audio or video that pertains to your web site should not come on automatically as this too will slow down your loading time. Instead, you should create it so that your user can turn on and off the audio or video. Another reason why you should do this is because having it come on automatically can freeze up your user's browser.

If you have a web site and you have traded links with various directories or other web sites, you may have to put their logos on your web site. While this may sound fine, you should know that it will also slow down your web site's load time.

Other things that you should take into consideration whenever you are looking at your web site's load time include how fast your hosting service is as well as the type of Internet connection that you have. For instance, if you are on dial up then there is nothing that you are going to be able to do in order to improve the web site's load time.

In all reality, your web site should load in an average of 15 seconds. While some patient people will wait for up to 1 minute for your web site to load, anything longer than that is going to make people leave your site. This is because there is nothing more frustrating than waiting for a site to load. So, anything that you can do to fix this is a big plus.
