These days it can be very expensive to buy holiday ornaments or other holiday decorations. In trying to save money Moms have come up with more frugal and fun ideas on how to make these holiday decorations, or gifts. Here are some ideas for you that use items you may already have around the house.
1. I Love Cookie Ornaments
I enjoy making cookie ornaments to hang on my tree and my kids love to help me make tham. You can use cookie cutters you already have on hand and bake cookies to hang on the tree. If you do not have cookie cutters make your own,it's easy. One easy design for you to make is a pretzel cookie, and they are easy to hang on the tree with a piece of ribbon. Here's how I do it.
Roll out a small piece of your favorite dough to about 3 inches.
Take the two ends and overlap them at the top to form an upside down letter “Q” – or make any loop shape.
After the pretzel is baked, you can tie a ribbon through the hole in the shape of a bow, and hang it on the tree.
2. Paper Tree Ornaments
Paper Tree Ornaments are so easy and fun to make. You just get some white construction paper and cut out Christmas trees. You and your child can make each one personalized by putting a name on it,and decorating each one with some stickers, markers, glitter and ribbons, you can even draw a picture on it. You can use these paper trees to make a border in your child’s room, across a door entrance or you can string them together and make a garland to drape around your Christmas tree.
3. Christmas Stocking Ornaments
You can make your own Christmas stocking ornaments using old materials you have laying around the house. You can use different fabrics, textures and colors to make them colorful and cheery. Get some bows to glue on them or you can use beads or ribbons. You can personalize these like you did the Paper Tree Ornaments, by putting names on them or special drawings. When you have finished the stockings you can cut a piece of material into a loop and sew or pin it on the stocking. Now that they are done you can hang them on the tree, or the mantle.
Your family will remember making homemade ornaments with you and perhaps carry the tradition on with their own children. It helps your child's imagination grow and expand and it is lots of fun for everyone in the family. Why not plan a night with the grandparents to come over and help.
It is so special to decide to make a gift for someone and then to proudly give it to them knowing the love you and your child have put into making it. It is a much more satisfying feeling than just going to the store and buying a gift. It is a great way to spend family time with your children around the holidays. And you will alleiviate some of the holiday spending because these are the best gifts you could give.
Before you rush out and buy your holiday ornaments check around the house and see what you can use to make the ornaments. It is amazing what you can find!
